The
sun rises in a pale halo of dust particles above the Thar Desert.
Some of the camel traders are stirring under blankets. Others
are brewing chai and smoking their first chillums, discussing
business strategies.
An air of expectation lies over the area, an easy tension appears
to grip the tall skinny men in their neon colored turbans, who
stand in small groups talking quietly.
The hills, men and camels are all ready to partake in a time-honored
ritual, a grand gesture of respect towards nature, tradition and
business.
The Pushkar Camel Fair, which is said to attract some 20.000 camels
and more than 200.000 people, is the largest cattle fair in Rajasthan
and has been an annual event for decades.
